Delivering eye care

bring its world leading expertise closer
to patients and communities.
In partnership with Moorfields and UCL,
we are creating the Moorfields and UCL
Centre for Eye Health – a new home for
outstanding clinical care, research and
education. Now under construction in
London’s Knowledge Quarter and opening
in 2027, the centre has been shaped by
patients from the start. As former trustee
of Moorfields Eye Charity and patient
advocate, Dr Rob Jones, says: “The design
of the new centre has been patient-led, so
it will be fully accessible and have the best
possible facilities for patients and carers,
staff, researchers and educators”.
A major part of this transformation is
Moorfields’ single point of access for
referral and coordination (SPARC) – a
digital referral and triage model that
ensures patients reach the right care
first time. By standardising referrals,
centralising triage, offering advice and
refer support to community optometrists
and giving patients more choice over
where they are seen, SPARC is reducing
unnecessary appointments, cutting waiting
times and improving equity of access.

Together, SPARC and the diagnostic hubs
create an integrated, scalable model for
modern eye care. They also extend the
reach of the new centre for eye health
– patients can benefit from its world
class expertise without always travelling
to the hospital, receiving faster, more
convenient care closer to home. As
Moorfields’ medical director and charity
trustee, Miss Louisa Wickham notes, this is
“fundamentally changing how and where
eye care is delivered”.
